Tackling Poverty and Unemployment in Stainforth
Tackling Poverty. Creating Opportunity. Strengthening Stainforth.
S4ALL is a community anchor charity working to reduce poverty, unemployment and inequality in Stainforth and the surrounding DN7 area.
Stainforth is a former mining community facing significant economic and social disadvantage. Neighbourhoods within the town are ranked among the most deprived 10% in England, with local people affected by unemployment, low incomes, poor health, limited qualifications, digital exclusion and barriers to accessing essential services.
Behind these statistics are people with skills, ambitions and potential who are too often held back by circumstances beyond their control. Our purpose is to provide the practical help, opportunities and trusted local support they need to move forward.
Practical help when it matters most
We work directly with unemployed people, low-income households and residents facing hardship. Our services help people overcome immediate barriers while building the skills, confidence and independence needed for lasting change.
Our work includes:
-
One-to-one employment support, job searching, CV writing and interview preparation
-
Access to vocational qualifications, licences, PPE, travel and other essentials needed to start work
-
Free digital-skills training and help accessing online services
-
Support for unemployed residents to start small businesses
-
Free internet access, computer use, printing and practical IT assistance
-
Affordable clothing, household items and books through our charity shop
-
Food, warm-space provision and targeted help for people experiencing financial hardship
-
Volunteering opportunities that build skills, confidence and routes towards employment
We understand that the barriers people face are rarely simple. A person may be ready to work but unable to afford a CSCS card, safety clothing or transport to an interview. Someone may need to apply for Universal Credit or search for jobs but lack a computer or the confidence to use one. Others may have been out of work for years and need patient, individual support before they can take their next step.
S4ALL exists to close these gaps.
A proven record of changing lives
Since taking over Stainforth Community Library in 2011, S4ALL has developed it into a trusted centre for employment support, skills, digital inclusion and poverty relief.
Our achievements include:
-
Supporting more than 768 people through employability projects
-
Helping more than 244 people secure sustainable employment
-
Providing free digital-skills training to hundreds of local residents
-
Distributing 200 computer tablets to people affected by digital exclusion
-
Helping unemployed residents establish viable small businesses
-
Providing thousands of hours of free computer and internet access
Because we are based within the community, people can approach us without the formality or stigma they may associate with statutory services. We take time to understand each person’s circumstances and provide support shaped around what they actually need.
Tackling poverty across generations
Poverty affects whole families and can restrict children’s opportunities long before they reach working age. Our free educational trips, children’s activities, books, digital access and seasonal support ensure that children are not excluded simply because their families cannot afford the opportunities others take for granted.
These activities form part of our wider anti-poverty work. They help reduce pressure on low-income households, prevent isolation and give children experiences that build confidence, aspiration and a sense of possibility.
Our community groups, library, museum and social activities also provide safe and welcoming ways for adults to reconnect with others, develop confidence and take their first steps towards volunteering, learning or employment.
Rooted in Stainforth
S4ALL was established as Stainforth Partnership in 2005. In 2011, we became Stainforth 4 ALL and took responsibility for Stainforth Community Library when it was threatened with closure. We became the first community-run library in Doncaster and have since grown into an established anchor organisation serving Stainforth and the wider DN7 area.
We are a small, locally led charity with an experienced staff team and dedicated volunteers. Our strength comes from being part of the community we serve. We understand the challenges local people face, we build long-term relationships and we can respond quickly when someone needs help.
Our mission
Our mission is to:
-
Relieve poverty and hardship in Stainforth and the surrounding DN7 area.
-
Help unemployed and economically inactive people move towards secure, sustainable employment.
-
Improve access to skills, qualifications, digital technology and essential services.
-
Reduce isolation and support the wellbeing of vulnerable residents.
-
Improve the life chances and aspirations of children, young people and families.
-
Contribute to the long-term social and economic regeneration of our community.
We believe that where someone lives—or how much money they have—should not determine the opportunities available to them. By providing practical support in a trusted community setting, S4ALL helps local people overcome barriers, improve their circumstances and build more secure futures.
